NEW JERSEY PGA TO RECEIVE MGWA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Elmsford, NY (June 5, 2014) --- The New Jersey Section of the PGA, because of the tireless, pervasive and grass roots work of the New Jersey Golf Foundation, has been selected to receive the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

The presentation will be made on June 23rd at the MGWA’s 63rd National Awards Dinner at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.  The award honors individuals, as well as organizations, for their contributions and service to golf and for inspiring others who love this great game.

The New Jersey Golf Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2004 as the official charity of The New Jersey Section of the PGA.  With a mission to grow the game of golf in New Jersey and teach life lessons through the game of golf, the Foundation strives to give people, across the state their introduction to golf by offering free lessons and instilling the values inherent in golf through activities and special events that show golf can be fun for people of all ages and backgrounds.

A majority of the Foundation activities target N.J.’s youth and provide access to both facilities and equipment. The N.J. Golf Foundation has become a part of local YMCA groups, The First Tee and The Boys Girls Club.  Other programs such as The Special Olympics and SNAP, an athletic program for kids with special needs, also benefit from the New Jersey Golf Foundation.

Each year, the Foundation conducts a popular and successful charity event called the Golf Marathon, which consists of playing 100 holes of golf in one day.  The first 100 hole golf marathon was completed by Allan Bowman, PGA Professional at Cherry Valley Country Club.

Other events conducted by the Foundation are the annual N.J. Golf Classic and The Peter A. Famiano Memorial Pro-Am.  Funds raised support a $10,000 annual scholarship, which is awarded to a worthy student golfer, in Peter Famiano’s honor.

Chris Bauer is the executive director of the New Jersey Section of the PGA and Chris Hunt is the executive director of the Foundation. Andy Brock of Metuchen Golf & Country Club is the current  president and Gregg Angelillo is the president of the Foundation’s board of directors.

The Met Golf Writers will also honor Fred Couples (Gold Tee Award), Nancy Lopez (Winnie Palmer Award), John Feinstein (Golf Journalism Award), Travelers (Bing Crosby Award) and The Blackwelders (Family of the Year).

Since 1952, the MGWA has recognized the game’s greatest Players, Contributors, and Organizations at its National Awards Dinner – the longest running and often the largest golf dinner in the U.S. each year.

Golf’s leading organizations support the dinner – USGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, MGA, MetLife, and Rolex.  The National Awards Dinner has raised over 1.5 million dollars for Caddie Scholarship programs in the metropolitan New York area; the MGA Foundation; and the Dave Marr Journalism Scholarship at Columbia University.
