About the Course: Designed by A.W. Tillinghast, Shackamaxon (a Native American word meaning “place where chiefs meet”) opened on the former Lambert’s Mill property on Sept. 2, 1916. The first club pro was Cyril Walker, who would win the 1924 U.S. Open. Noted pros over the years include Bobby Cruickshank and Babe Lichardus. The club has hosted five New Jersey Opens, two New Jersey Amateurs, a Met Open, the 1955 Cavalcade of Golf,s and more. Recent renovations and course changes have been overseen by architect Stephen Kay. Five sets of tees range 5,223 to 6,710 yards. Par is 70.
Competition: The Quill & Tee President’s Cup competition will take place (Q&T membership and USGA handicap indexes required). Prizes for the day include individual net leaders, plus nearest-to-the-pins.
Caddies: Forecaddies will accompany each group. Fee is $40 per person, plus tip.
Dress Code: No denim or jeans. Collared shirts tucked in. Bermuda shorts OK (no cargoes). No wearing of hats in clubhouse (except locker rooms).
Entries: Enter either online via www.metgolfwriters.org or return the attached form with a check, payable to Met Golf Writers, for $75 to Kate Keller, MGWA Executive Administrator, 49 Knollwood Rd, Elmsford, NY 10523, by 3 pm, Friday, July 8. No refunds after that date. If you are listing playing partners for preferences, please make sure that the others listed also are attending.
