TRAVELERS TO RECEIVE BING CROSBY SPONSOR AWARD

Elmsford, NY   (June 2, 2014) — Travelers will receive the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award from the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at the 63rd National Awards Dinner on Monday, June 23

at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York.

The Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award is presented to an individual or organization that promotes and supports the game of golf through commercial sponsorship of quality events.  Past recipients include Rolex, MasterCard, Shell Oil, Yogi Berra, Ken Venturi, Bob Hope, and the first recipient, Nathanial Crosby in 1978.

The Travelers Championship is played each year at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT, outside of Hartford.  This year’s PGA TOUR event will be held June 16-22.

Travelers recently extended its title sponsorship agreement for 10 years, joining AT&T Pebble Beach with the longest title sponsor renewals on the PGA TOUR.  The multi-year agreement ensures the tournament will continue to support local charities, such as The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for children dealing with life-threatening illnesses.

Since the inaugural Travelers Championship in 2007, the tournament has made a number of improvements that have earned it PGA TOUR recognition, including the “Most Fan-Friendly Event,” “Best Title Sponsor Integration,” “Best Marketing Plan,” and “Best Charity Integration.” These improvements include one of the PGA TOUR’s largest practice facilities (23 acres); adding family-friendly concerts to the Fan Zone; holding a 5K road race; a Women’s Day; Operation Shower, which holds baby showers for expecting military families; and Military Appreciation.

During the first seven years of Travelers’ title sponsorship, the tournament has generated more than $7 million for 500 charities, including a record $1.25 million in 2013 (and now more than $31 million since the event’s inception in 1952).

“Travelers is honored to receive the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award,” said Andy Bessette, Travelers Executive VP and Chief Administrative Officer.  “Our sponsorship of the Travelers Championship provides us with an outstanding opportunity to support the community, raising significant funds for local charities, plus we’re committed to continue making it a first-rate event for players, sponsors and the fans.”

The Travelers Companies is a leading provider of property casualty insurance for auto, home and business.

The Met Golf Writers will also honor Fred Couples (Gold Tee Award), Nancy Lopez (Winnie Palmer Award), John Feinstein  (Golf Journalism Award), and The Blackwelders (Family of the Year).

Since 1952, the MGWA has recognized the game’s greatest Players, Contributors, and Organizations at its National Awards Dinner – the longest running and often the largest golf dinner in the U.S. each year.

A special video celebrates the six decades of the Dinner …  https://vimeo.com/63849701

Long-time MGWA member Jim Nantz says, “There is no dinner in America that celebrates golf like this one.”

Golf’s leading organizations support the dinner – USGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, MGA, MetLife, and Rolex.  The National Awards Dinner has raised over 1.5 million dollars for Caddie Scholarship programs in the metropolitan New York area; the MGA Foundation; and the Dave Marr Journalism Scholarship at Columbia University.
