GlenArbor Golf Club Named MGWA Club of the Year

Elmsford, NY (July 26, 2023) – GlenArbor Golf Club will receive the 2023 Metropolitan Golf Writers Association Club of the Year Award at their 71^st National Awards Dinner on Wednesday, October 11^th.  The Dinner will be held at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor, NY, site of this year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur tournament.  Larry Nelson (Gold Tee Award), Gil Hanse (Paul Dillon Distinguished Service Award), Jimmy Roberts (Lincoln Werden Golf Journalism Award), Julio Ugaz (Mary Bea Porter Award), and the Youngs (Cameron, David, and Barbara), MGWA Family of the Year, are among others who will be honored at the Dinner.
 
GlenArbor GC, in Bedford, NY, is steeped in history.  George Washington’s troops marched through the land, and John Jay, our country’s first Supreme Court Chief Justice, lived nearby.  The site was owned by Harold T. White, whose wife, Ruth Underhill White, was the 1899 U.S. Ladies Amateur Champion (her trophy is on display in GlenArbor’s clubhouse).  The club was founded on four core principals, which are still followed today: uphold the traditions of golf, with an emphasis on camaraderie and friendly competition; continued stewardship of the land, illustrated by GlenArbor’s dedication to conservation; a commitment to giving back through charitable partnerships; and contributions to lifetime learning, as demonstrated by GlenArbor’s commitment to continuing education.  Keeping these principals in the forefront has been GlenArbor’s mission since its inception, and every member and guest has benefitted from them.
 
GlenArbor’s beautiful and challenging golf course – site of numerous MGA championships – was designed by Gary Player, who calls it his “masterpiece.”  In addition to the course, there is also a 9-hole short game facility and a state-of-the-art teaching center.  GlenArbor also conducts numerous golf academies and boasts a Prodigy program for up-and-coming young players.

GlenArbor GC is the latest in a distinguished list of clubs that have earned the MGWA’s coveted Club of the Year Award.  The award is bestowed upon a Met-area club “for upholding the spirit and traditions of golf through energetic support and consistent dedication to the game.” The first recipient of the MGWA’s Club of the Year award, in 1980, was Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ.  Other renowned clubs who were honored with this prestigious award include Winged Foot GC, Bethpage State Park, Sleepy Hollow CC, North Jersey CC and last year’s winner, Hempstead Golf & CC..
 
The MGWA has celebrated the game of golf and promoted golf journalism since its inception in 1952.  Each year, it honors the sport’s champions and contributors at its largest fundraiser, the National Awards Dinner.  This highly anticipated event is supported by golf’s leading organizations and corporate supporters, Met Area clubs and club leaders, as well as local and national golf media. Through the Dinner and other events, the MGWA has raised millions of dollars for the Association’s beneficiaries, which include Caddie Scholarship programs in the Metropolitan New York area, the MGA Foundation, and the Dave Marr Journalism Scholarship at Columbia University.
