About the Club & Course: This venerable Long Island classic, originally designed by Englishman Peter Lees and opened in 1921, then altered in 1927 by A.W. Tillinghast, has had a modern updating by course architect Stephen Kay. Hempstead is gearing up for its Centennial anniversary in 2021. The course features some tight holes cut through trees, while others are more open and rolling, and all have a good amount of bunkers. With six sets of tees, the par-72 layout --- with three par-3s, three par-5s and a dozen par-4s --- stretches from 5,329 yards to 6,768; slope ratings range from 119 to 131.
Competition: The Quill & Tee Two Person Team Better Ball is the main feature; there will be an MGWA Two-Person Better Ball as well (USGA handicap indexes are required). Q&T winners, for both men and women, are eligible to advance to sectional qualifying for the annual Met Golf Association (www.mgagolf.org) Four Ball “Met Net” Team event. Q&T/MGWA prizes for the day include two-person team winners, plus nearest-to-the-pins. As always, everyone is welcome to play, with or without competing. Q&T champs advance to a choice of one among four MGA sectional qualifiers. The MGA men’s/women’s championships are both in October at clubs on Long Island (full details will be available at Hempstead).
Caddies: Forecaddies will accompany each group. Fee is $40 per person, which includes gratuity. Tipping more is allowed should you feel it warranted, but is not required.
Dress Code: No denim, jeans or cargos; no tank tops or t-shirts. Collared or turtleneck shirts tucked in. Golf shorts OK. No wearing hats in main portion of clubhouse. Metal spikes prohibited.
Cell Phone Policy: Ringers off. Cell phones are permitted in parking lot, locker rooms. Texting is OK.

Rest of 2019 MGWA Schedule
Wednesday, July 31, The Tuxedo Club, Tuxedo Park, NY. Located within the historic Tuxedo Park enclave in southern Orange County, The Tuxedo Club was honored at our recent MGWA National Awards Dinner as our Met- area Club of the Year. The venue maintains a renowned mystique and is situated not far from the northern New Jersey border and just over the Rockland County line. Feature attractions for our gathering include both our Quill & Tee GC member-guest tournament and our Q&T Club Championship in flights.
Monday, August 12, Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, NY. Our annual gathering (since 1998) at Bethpage State Park is set for the day after the scheduled final round of the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust event at Liberty National, still the first stage of the new three-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs which will henceforth alternate year-by-year with courses in the Metropolitan and Boston realms. For those who would have difficulty walking the Black course, a few tee times will be available on the well-regarded Red course, which does allow riding carts. The timetable for the day is still being formulated but possibly may feature a morning press conference with the PGA of America --- to review the recent PGA Championship and preview the 2024 Ryder Cup --- followed by a mid-morning shotgun golf start.
September/October date TBA, Manhattan Woods GC, West Nyack, NY. Located just off the Palisades Parkway in Rockland County, NY, there is new ownership, new staff overseeing the club and the golf operation, and a major renovation to MWGC’s expansive practice and learning facilities. The course, designed by Gary Player, is considered top-notch, diverse, interesting, and challenging but fair for all skill levels with multiple tee boxes. A date for our gathering should be announced soon. As is our norm, our final get-together for the season will feature our MGWA Team Shootout, a best two balls of four event with handicaps.
