About Tuxedo: The club and its surrounding residential community in southern Orange County, NY (just over the Rockland County line in the Ramapo Hills and not far from New Jersey) date back to 1886 when a gathering of tycoons built an exclusive expanse of stately homes, a racetrack, golf facility, toboggan slide, clubhouse and more. The nature of the private enclave, however, changed with the impact of the Depression and World War II, and the golf course was doomed by the construction of the New York State Thruway in the early 1950s. Subsequently, The Tuxedo Club purchased a nearby farm two miles south of its main clubhouse and engaged Robert Trent Jones, Sr. to design a new course, which opened its first nine in 1956 and a second nine the following year. The present course has been described as “penal, strategic and heroic,” with water in play on 11 of the 18 holes. The current par-71 course, with several sets of tees, measures from 5,368 yards to 6,807 (74.2 rating, 135 slope). From the middle tees, the layout stretches 6,258 yards (69.7, 132).
Competition: Back by popular acclaim, our Quill & Tee Golf Club is offering a Member-Guest event, running concurrently with the Q&TGC Club Championship individual competition. All Q&TGC attendees will be entered in the Club Championship, which will be scored at scratch. If entries warrant, the event will be conducted in flights. Additionally, Q&TGC members who sign up may invite a non-MGWA guest to join you and compete in a two-person Member-Guest event, with handicaps (the Q&T member-guest is limited to the first 20 members to sign up, but will be increased if overall room allows). All competitors must maintain verifiable USGA-GHIN handicap indexes. Prizes will be awarded in both Member-Guest and Club Championship competitions, along with Nearest to the Pin contests for all attendees. As always, of course, all MGWA members are encouraged to attend and play golf, but the Member-Guest is a perk for our club-without-real-estate Quill & Tee members only. If sufficient entries are received from non-Q&T members, there will be an MGWA individual competition at scratch.
Caddies: Forecaddies will accompany each group. Fee is $40 per golfer, which includes a tip. However, additional gratuity is OK if warranted.
Dress Code, Cell Phones: All MGWA events at Met area clubs require appropriate golf attire. Shirts with collars. No jeans, cargo shorts or T-shirts. Please remove hats during our meeting session. Audible use of cell phones is restricted to parking areas only.
Directions: Please see directions on the club website (www.thetuxedoclub.org/directions).
