About Manhattan Woods: A rolling parkland course with various ups and downs as it proceeds through its Rockland County location. Opened in 1999, MWGC was in the planning stages for seven-plus years, with several ownership and designer changes (among the early routings were layouts drawn by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus). The current course, designed by Gary Player with key input from Stephen Kay, features five distinct sets of tees catering to all skill levels. The par-72 course ranges from 5,090 yards (70.7/132) to 7,110 yards (76.0/153) off the tees. It is considered both fair and challenging. Located just off Exit 7 of the Palisades Parkway, the Manhattan skyline is visible from several locations on the course.
Competition: The annual MGWA Team Shootout, a two best balls of foursome (80% handicap) format, will take place. For those planning teams in advance, select and verify your partners' attendance before submitting your entry. Players must have verifiable handicaps, or may play at scratch. We encourage everyone to form teams in advance. For company or organization entries (such as NY Post, NY Times, Golf Digest, NBC, ESPN, USGA, MGA), teams may include some employees or representatives of the organization who are not MGWA members, or MGWA members not necessarily from a designated company or organization (for the purpose of the Shootout competition). If you wish assistance in forming or joining a team, please contact Chuck Stogel (914-428-6111; chstogel@aol.com).
In addition to the Team Shootout, our Quill & Tee Club Championship in flights (postponed from Tuxedo Club in July), will be contested concurrently. Members of the Quill & Tee Golf Club will automatically be entered in the Club Championship competition. You do not have to enroll for the Q&T event.
Casio Presentation: The Casio PRO TREK SMART WSD-F30 Smart Watch will be our featured product at Manhattan Woods. Powered by the Wear OS by Google operating system, Casio’s Pro Trek smart watch is a timepiece made for outdoor enthusiasts. Equipped with low-power GPS and full color maps with navigation even when offline, the product also offers Casio’s Triple Sensor Technology (Altimeter, Barometer and Compass). Of particular interest to golfers, Casio has partnered with Hole19, one of the most comprehensive Android golf assistants, to optimize the golfing experience on the WSD-F30.
Caddies: Forecaddies will accompany each group. Fee is $60 per golfer, which includes the tip.
Dress code: Golf attire. No jeans or cargo shorts. Collared or mock-net shirts. Please remove hats in main clubhouse, except OK in locker rooms.
Cell phones: Talking on cell phones is allowed in locker rooms and parking lot only. Phones should be silenced on the course and in the clubhouse (texts are OK).
Online Entries: Enter via www.metgolfwriters.org (you must be logged in to access the signup page by clicking the green Login box in the upper right corner of the home page. Your username is your email and your password is your last name with the first letter capitalized. If you receive an “Access Denied” message, you have not logged in.). If paying by check, you may return the form below with a check, payable to Metropolitan Golf Writers Association, for $85 per player to Robin Sauerhaft, MGWA Client Administrator, 49 Knollwood Rd, Elmsford, NY 10523 by 2:00 pm Thursday, October 10th. Because this is a four-person team event, non-team pairing preferences cannot be guaranteed. Please DO NOT wait until the deadline to sign up! No refunds will be issued after the deadline.
Cancellation Policy: Please read the “MGWA Meeting/Outing Cancellation Policy” found under “Meeting and Outing Announcements” on our website (www.metgolfwriters.org).
