MGWA ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL

2021 NATIONAL AWARDS CELEBRATION

Elmsford, NY (April 1, 2021) – The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association is delighted to announce that its National Awards Dinner, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will return – albeit in a vastly different form.

With health guidelines in mind, the MGWA determined that a traditional Dinner with hundreds of in-person attendees would not be possible.  Instead, they will host a completely virtual celebration on October 6, 2021.  While details are still being determined, the event will originate from the historic Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY, site of last year’s U.S. Open.  With Winged Foot as the backdrop, the festivities will be a can’t-miss addition to any golf fans’ viewing calendar.  Information regarding how and when the event can be viewed will be released in the coming weeks.

The previously announced 2020 honorees  will be celebrated this year:

  • Gold Tee Award winner – Butch Harmon
  • Distinguished Service Award winner – Renee Powell
  • Lincoln Werden Golf Journalism Award Winner – Johnny Miller
  • Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award Winner – Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Family of the Year – the Ballo Family
  • Club of the Year – North Jersey Country Club

The MGWA has celebrated the game’s greatest players, contributors, and organizations at its National Awards Dinner – the country’s largest, longest-running golf dinner– since 1952. Normally, this highly anticipated annual event is attended by nearly 600 guests, representing golf’s leading organizations, corporate supporters, Met Area Clubs and Club leaders, as well as local and national golf media.  This year’s virtual format allows the event to be larger than ever, making it available to thousands of golf fans across the country.

The MGWA has raised millions of dollars for Caddie Scholarship programs in the Metropolitan New York area, the MGA Foundation, and the Dave Marr Journalism Scholarship at Columbia University.  MGWA contributions from the 2019 Dinner helped fund college scholarships for more than 650 young men and women in the NY Metro area this past academic year.
