TO HONOR STEVE DIMEGLIO WITH THE

LINCOLN WERDEN GOLF JOURNALISM AWARD

For Immediate Release

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 15, 2024) Veteran golf writer Steve DiMeglio has been chosen by the MGWA to receive the Lincoln Werden Golf Journalism Award at its 72nd National Awards Dinner on Monday, October 7th at Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, NY.  Mr. DiMeglio joins a distinguished lineup of honorees, including recently announced 2024 Gold Tee Award winner Luke Donald.

The MGWA’s Lincoln Werden Journalism Award is presented to a writer, broadcaster, photographer, artist, or other individual for outstanding contributions in the field of golf journalism. Previous recipients of this prestigious award include notable correspondents Jim McKay, Jack Whitaker, Jim Nantz and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Anderson. More recently, Hank Gola (2018), Larry Dorman (2019), Johnny Miller (2020-21) and Mark Cannizzaro (2022) received this coveted recognition.  Last year’s recipient was famed journalist Jimmy Roberts.

After graduating from Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University Mankato), DiMeglio began his professional writing career by authoring 16 children's books on sports. He was hired by the Indio Daily News (California) in 1988 and moved to the Palm Springs Desert Sun in 1989. Ten years later, he was hired by Gannett News Service in the nation's capital. A year later, he joined Baseball Weekly and USA Today as a reporter. After six years of covering major league baseball, he became USA Today's golf writer.

DiMeglio quickly built up relationships that last to this day with his colleagues, caddies, PGA Tour and LPGA Tour staff, and players, including Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Dottie Pepper, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland and Phil Mickelson. These bonds were born from the miles he walked inside the ropes and up and down driving ranges all over the world. The access allowed DiMeglio to establish trust among the players that enhanced his writing.

“Steve has a gift, and he’s given it to all of us. With his fair and consistent approach, he has earned the faith and friendship of the biggest names in golf,” said MGWA President Brian CrowellContinued Crowell,To share inside information for decades, while preserving that trust, takes a very special person. We’re proud to honor Steve DiMeglio with the Lincoln Werden Award.”
